THE STORY OF HOW IT ALL CAME TO BE:
GAME DAY was born out of the one-act play PINK DOT originally produced in March of 2005 by Camelot Artists in their New Voices original one-act festival. The play started out as an exercise. Two friends of mine, and producers of the festival, asked me to write something. They didn’t expect too many scripts and wanted to make sure they had something to read. In the end, over 250 scripts were submitted and 20 were chosen. Of the 20 only 16 were produced.
I wanted the play to be the execution of a perfect murder. I watched the HBO America Undercover series AUTOPSY, all the CSI shows, the Forensic Files on the Discovery Channel and any other crime show I could get my hands on. I read James Ellroy novels and true crime novels. I looked at crime scene photos from the LA police department. I figured I was an expert – I figured wrong.
Through the course of a year and a half, 2 directors, 3 cast changes and 10 drafts – the second to last being a page 1 re-write – the play finally emerged. PINK DOT found life through the direction of Allen Barton the stars Jonathan Coogan, Al Faris and Griff Furst.
PINK DOT was a huge success and played to standing room only audiences. At all the performances was Stephen Furst, in part because he was a fan, but mostly because his son was in it. Stephen felt that it was a solid piece and could stand up to any short film being made and shown in film festivals. We figured he knew what he was talking about since he is a voting member of the Academy. "Why not shoot it and submit it?" he asked us. After realizing what he said, Stephen decided he should be the one to direct the short.
In three days in June, PINK DOT became GAME DAY. A lot of favors were called in. People worked for less than scale and, at times, for nothing at all. The shoot was a collaborative effort on all parties involved.
Thanks for coming by and I hope you'll come see the film when it plays at film festivals around the country.
